Blackberry App World Info Part I
Last week Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World opened to developers, and with the opening came more information of how the application storefront will work.
We will be providing some analysis of the latest OEM owned and operated App Store in a series of posts as we read through the developer agreement, rules of engagement, etc.
So, first things first.
1. When will App World be available?
They have not released specific dates but you can sign up on their website here to get notified when the store is live.
2. What devices will be supported?
BlackBerry App World works with compatible BlackBerry smartphones running OS version 4.2.0 or higher and is supported on the following devices:
- BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphone
- BlackBerry Storm smartphone
- BlackBerry Pearl Flip Series
- BlackBerry Curve 8300 Series
- BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphone
- BlackBerry 8800 Series
- BlackBerry Pearl Series
3. Where will BlackBerry App World be available?
BlackBerry App World will launch in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.
No word yet on how someone with a compatible device will get access to App World but inside sources have told me that it will be available as an over-the-air download to your device and ultimately will come pre-loaded on newer devices. My assumption is that there will also be a desktop accessible storefront (similar to iTunes) but no definitive word on that either.
In the next post we will look at the pricing model, revenue share to developers and billing options for consumers and developers.
